Legislators are coming home from Olympia for one reason: to listen to you.
With tough budget negotiations around the corner, it's important we show up at upcoming Town Hall meetings and make our voices heard. Town halls are a rare opportunity to speak directly with our representatives, to share our stories, and influence the priorities in Olympia for years to come.
Our representatives need to hear how much we support cleaning up Washington's upside down tax code so that works for all of us, not just the wealthy and powerful. Right now, Washington’s tax code is the most upside down in the nation – working families and the middle class pay a rate up to 7 times higher than the richest households. That’s because powerful interests have manipulated the tax code by inserting breaks that benefit themselves.
If we clean up the tax code and get rid of wasteful tax breaks, we’ll have more resources to invest in the foundations of thriving communities like excellent schools, modern infrastructure, and good paying jobs. Town Hall meetings are a vital opportunity for our senators and representatives to hear how much we support cleaning up the tax code to raise the resources necessary for strong, thriving communities. If we want the best schools in the nation, we need a tax code where everyone chips in their share, including powerful special interests and the wealthy. Beginning next Saturday, March 11th, our representatives will begin hosting town halls across the state.

Sample questions you can ask include:
Q1) Our kids deserve great schools that we can achieve if we clean up our tax code. But powerful special interests have manipulated our tax code by inserting tax breaks that benefit themselves -- and take billions of dollars from our communities. We are one of only a few states with a tax break on capital gains, which are the sale of stocks and bonds. Will you support closing this tax break for powerful special interests so that we can fund our kids’ schools?
Q2) I was shocked to learn that people making less than $20,000 a year pay seven times more of their annual income than what people making over $500,000/year pay. What action will you take to address our upside down tax code where the poor pay seven times more than the powerful?
